Equinox Gallery, 2026

In creating this exhibition, my studio became a hall of mirrors. I increasingly paint in series, where five or six canvases are being worked on simultaneously, almost as if one continuous piece, creating a dialogue and flow between canvases that might ultimately be separate works. Finished pieces are removed from my working wall and become references for the next series, leaned and hung where there is space throughout the studio. As the process continues canvases are stacked and layered, photographs of details are printed and laid on the floor to become collages, and eventually the entire space feels like an echo chamber

Temperance #1-4

Yesterdays and Days Before #2

The experience of creating a series of work cannot be encapsulated better than the concept of a chain reaction. The beginning is always an indefinite point– it’s very hard to get that first piece of work out into the world, it feels like climbing Everest, pulling together that first bit of inspiration into something tangible. From there, the rest of the experience would be better described at falling down Everest.

Lightning Running Through #2-3

Each piece is inspiration for the following, you tumble from one artwork to the next, gathering speed and picking up new quirks or rhythms that appear throughout the work. The tempo increases as I reach the end, both in the speed of creation and in the content of the work itself. The pieces become more energetic, uncontrolled, complex.

Love and Brutality #1

Hell Hath No Fury #5

It makes sense that as you get into a flow, it comes more naturally, although it’s hard to believe it will happen at the beginning of the process. What is less intuitive, and what I’ve come to realize throughout this show, is the way chain reactions are happening in the course of an individual painting. Each brushstroke is a move that opens up new possibilities for further action, the new landscape tempting you to keep going. The craft of painting is knowing when to put a sudden stop to these actions and reactions, at just the right time.
